Mahindra and Mahindra has formally opened its new design studio in Mumbai today. The Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) is located within the company’s Kandivali plant and represents a significant upgrade to the previous facility, which was established in 2015. According to the corporation, the new studio has doubled in size and now employs slightly more than one hundred designers.
Mahindra India Design Studio: what is it for?
The revamp has been developed to support Mahindra’s expanding auto portfolio as well as other businesses such as its Last Mile Mobility (LME) segment. MIDS can design last-mile commercial vehicles, small tractors, as well as the brand’s trucks and buses. It also features three model plates, one of which is large enough to accommodate truck cabins. A modelling plate is a work surface on which a 1:1 scale clay model can be constructed utilizing a 5-axis modelling robot and trained modellers.

Speaking to Autocar India at the inauguration Ajay Saran Sharma, Sr. Vice President of Design and Head of MIDS said “the facility includes all design functions required today right from exterior, interior to quality realisation and tech HMI design too”.
It has its own paintshop for clay models and body panels.
According to Mahindra, MIDS will collaborate with the company’s global design headquarters, Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE), which is based in the United Kingdom.
Pratap Bose, Mahindra’s Chief Design and Creative Officer, said Autocar India during the opening that “both centres will exist and work together, but I’m happy that with this investment in design in India, we can attract and retain talented designers in an Indian automotive company.”
