On Tuesday, singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh made his Met Gala debut, donning a turban as part of a heritage outfit inspired by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, the former monarch of the princely state of Patiala. He wore a cape with a map of Punjab embroidered on it, as well as an excellent diamond-emerald-layered necklace inspired by Maharaja Cartier. But none of it shone brighter than the legacy he brought with him on the blue carpet.
In a subsequent Instagram post, Dosanjh, who has been making India proud on the global arena, referred to himself as a symbol of the state of Punjab. He wrote of bringing the entire culture with him to what is regarded as the world’s biggest night of fashion.
The 41-year-old took satisfaction in using the Punjabi language in a post about his appearance and bringing his ‘turban’ character to a global event like the Met Gala. “MAIN HOON (Punjab) #METGALA. Inspired by the theme of Black Dandyism, I bring my turban, culture, and mother tongue “(Punjabi)” to The MET GALA (sic),” he stated in the caption of his image, tagging his team mates and thanking them for putting the complete appearance together.
Diljit was the first turbaned artist to attend the Met Gala. Pop singer Shakira joined him and others on her way to the event. Dosanjh and her rode in the same limousine. In fact, a video of the ‘Waka Waka’ singer stating “Hi, India” is currently going popular on social media.
Dosanjh’s complete design highlighted India’s royal history, grandeur, and colorful heritage on the global fashion scene. He possessed every aspect of the look in a manner that only he could!
Met Gala 2025
The 2025 Met Gala, held on May 5 at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, was themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and celebrated the growth of Black menswear and dandyism. The event, co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary co-chair, focused on the importance of customized clothes in Black identity. The companion Costume Institute show, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion, dives into the history of Black dandyism from the 18th century to today.

The dress code, “Tailored for You,” urged attendees to interpret menswear with creativity and individuality. Notable attendees included Rihanna, who announced her third pregnancy in a Marc Jacobs ensemble; Diana Ross, who returned after two decades in a Ugo Mozie gown with an 18-foot train; and Zendaya, who donned a Pharrell Williams-designed Louis Vuitton zoot suit. Demi Moore looked stunning on the red carpet in a Thom Browne gown covered with 1.4 million beads, Doja Cat in a Marc Jacobs ocelot-print bodysuit, and Jodie Turner-Smith in an equestrian-inspired Burberry costume.
Celebrities such as Quinta Brunson and Megan Thee Stallion wore hairdo and dress choices reminiscent of Josephine Baker for the evening, which honored cultural legends. Shah Rukh Khan made history as the first Indian male actor to attend the Met Gala, wearing a Sabyasachi costume. Kylie Jenner wowed in a revealing Ferragamo gown with a sheer corset bodice and high-slit skirt, while Taylor Swift dazzled in a gold gown with elaborate lacework that echoed Gilded Age style. Couples including Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, as well as Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, made synchronized appearances at the event. Despite the rain, the Met Gala 2025 was a night of extravagant fashion and cultural tribute, honoring Black sartorial tradition with elegance and creativity.
